The guest speaker will be Robert Steinberger, Behavioral Health Coordinator at the Graham Academy. While studying for his undergraduate degree, Bob took a job at St. Joseph’s Center in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. It was at this point of his college career while working with individuals with severe physical and cognitive disabilities, he found his passion for working with individuals with special needs. At that point, Bob changed his course of study to psychology the following semester and never looked back. In 1994, he began working with a child with autism in his home, doing behavior modification therapy that later went on to be called discrete trial. After graduation, Bob spent many years working as a Therapeutic Staff Support throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania before coming to the Graham Academy. He developed skills in the areas of working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as children with behavioral and emotional needs. He believes that data driven intervention is the best way to make a permanent positive change in the areas of behavior and academics, but no single approach is the only way to get things done. Bob trains all Graham Academy staff in Safe Crisis Management through JKM Training, Inc. He is certified through the Bureau of Autism in performing functional behavior assessments. At the Graham Academy, one of Bob’s missions is the complete elimination of the use of physical intervention in the school. He states “The need for physical intervention should always be viewed as a failure of the program to meet the needs of the individual.” He has implemented a school-wide positive behavior support system that ties into each child’s individual behavior support plan. Teaching appropriate behavior within the context of each environment is a difficult, but a necessary task.
Childcare and light refreshments will be provided.
